Meet SmartEngine: How We Build Your First Photo Book Draft

A camera roll can hold a whole life and still feel impossible to begin. SmartEngine turns your photographs, Story Mode and chosen design direction into a complete first version of the book. It arrives composed, editable and prepared around the realities of print.

Most camera rolls are full of memories and empty of structure. Art of Sundays is built to close that gap. Tell us what you are making, choose a visual direction and upload the photographs. SmartEngine does not open on an empty canvas. It prepares the complete first version of the book, with the cover, sequence, layouts and image placements already composed around the selected print format.

Your first view is already a book. The cover, page rhythm and image placements give you something real to react to, while every personal decision remains open. Replace a photograph, choose another layout, change the crop, edit the words or move the spreads until the result feels like your memory rather than a software demo.

People often describe this whole experience as an AI photo book. SmartEngine goes further than automatic placement. It combines deterministic story logic, image and print evidence, clear user intent and selected intelligence services with themes, colour palettes and layout systems drawn by hand. Each layer has a job, and the strongest rule wins: the final book belongs to the person making it.

A first draft, already designed

This is where Art of Sundays is different. SmartEngine starts with a complete proposal. It takes photographs that have passed the required editor checks, builds a chronological story foundation, groups nearby moments, chooses suitable layouts from the selected theme and assigns images according to orientation, resolution and the available frame. The first encounter is with a designed book, so the creative conversation begins at a far higher level than page one of an empty template.

The result is designed for print from the first composition. Format dimensions and DPI rules are part of the calculation, rather than a late export setting. When an image still carries a quality warning, the editor can surface the issue before order. Print readiness is a working constraint throughout the project, not a promise pasted onto the final screen.

What SmartEngine receives

The first draft is built from explicit choices and usable image evidence. It does not need to guess everything about the person behind the camera.

How the first draft is built

SmartEngine turns the input into a book through a sequence of visible, testable decisions rather than one opaque command.

  1. 1

    1. Establish Story Mode

The creative brief can be classified into a direction such as travel, wedding day, family year, baby year, event, pets, portfolio or a general chronological story. This helps the system understand the kind of book being made.

  2. 2

    2. Prepare the usable image set

Only images that have completed the required processing enter composition. Dimensions, orientation, timestamps, upload position and available location evidence form the working image record.

  3. 3

    3. Build a story foundation

Timestamps and available location evidence create a stable order and group nearby photographs into moments and events. Missing metadata falls back to upload order instead of inventing context.

  4. 4

    4. Rank useful candidates

The engine considers event density, chronology, image orientation, resolution and frame fit when selecting candidates for covers, larger moments and ordinary pages.

  5. 5

    5. Compose with curated layouts

SmartEngine works inside the chosen theme and format. Every theme is art-directed by hand, from its colour palette and type choices to the layouts available for single pages and spreads. The engine matches photographs to compatible frames, then varies density so the book has pace rather than one repeated grid.

  6. 6

    6. Check the path to print

Frame size, format width, crop and image resolution feed the quality checks. The draft arrives in the editor as a book-shaped starting point with the remaining corrections made visible.

Story Mode gives the draft a point of view

A wedding day, a year of family life and a road trip do not need the same narrative spine. Story Mode translates the user's direction into a structured hint. It can influence which themes appear first, how a title is suggested and which story pattern later planning layers should consider.

The hint stays soft. A travel label cannot force a theme the user rejected, remove a photograph or ignore the chronology carried by the files. That restraint is part of the product: intelligence should reduce setup work while leaving an obvious route back to the user's own judgement.

For a consumer, Story Mode means the first draft already understands the broad shape of the project. For a technical reader, it is one typed signal inside a wider Book Creation Context alongside product, format, theme and image evidence. For Art of Sundays, it is the foundation of a reusable creation layer for an entire category of memory products.

SmartEngine proposes, you author

The first draft removes setup work. Personal authorship stays visible in the decisions that follow.
OptionSmartEngine proposesYou decide
StoryA stable order, moment groups and a first narrative rhythmWhich memory matters, what can be omitted and where chronology should bend

Everything important remains editable

A strong first draft should make editing more interesting, not make editing disappear. In the Art of Sundays editor you can choose another cover, replace photographs in individual slots and browse other compatible layouts for a page or spread.

The photo editor controls crop position, zoom and rotation. Text remains editable. Spreads can be added, removed and moved, so the first sequence is a proposal rather than a locked timeline. Those controls are also how the product learns whether a draft was genuinely useful.

Art of Sundays records versioned creation decisions and selected lifecycle outcomes such as editor exit or print preflight. The learning system looks for patterns in layout and editing choices. Its current ranking candidates and shadow comparisons are read-only; they do not silently rewrite the active composition path.

This matters because fewer edits are not automatically better. Moving a photograph, changing a title or choosing a surprising layout can be the moment the book becomes personal. The platform is meant to remove repetitive setup and protect creative intervention, not score every human choice as a correction.

Where the first draft may need your eye

  • A missing or incorrect timestamp

The photograph may sit in the wrong moment. Move it to the right spread or correct the source order before recomposing.

  • Compressed or low-resolution files

A messaging-app copy may create a print warning. Replace it with the original file before giving it a large frame.

  • Near-duplicates with different meaning

Two similar frames can carry different gestures or people. Keep the one that matters, even when another scores better technically.

  • A technically strong but emotionally wrong cover

Choose the cover yourself. The engine can read image evidence; it cannot know which face or place should greet the reader.

  • A chapter that needs a deliberate break

Change the layout, add a spread or move pages when the suggested rhythm misses a transition the camera metadata cannot explain.

  • A crop that protects the frame but misses the moment

Open the photo editor and adjust position, zoom or rotation while keeping the print warning in view.

Private memories need a different kind of intelligence

Art of Sundays projects live in account-based workspaces, not public galleries or social feeds. Draft deletion has a dedicated cleanup path for project image records and stored derivatives that are not referenced elsewhere. The public privacy principle is simple: a personal archive should not become public content by default.

The creation-intelligence diagnostics are designed to store compact decisions and quality evidence rather than raw photographs, image URLs, private prompts, face identities or page text. The product thesis also keeps raw photos and personal memory content outside a general cross-user training pool. Changing that boundary would require a separate product, legal and consent decision.

The current Art of Sundays privacy page explains the account and project boundaries in public language.

Why SmartEngine is bigger than a shortcut

The ambition is larger than making one photo book faster. Art of Sundays is building the creation intelligence for a new generation of memory products. Personal direction and photographs enter; a designed, editable and print-aware first draft comes out; human choices refine it; carefully bounded outcome signals help future drafts improve.

The durable advantage sits in the connection between handcrafted design supply, explainable creation decisions, real editor behaviour and physical print constraints. Each theme can be tuned as a complete design system: palette, typography, cover language, page rhythm and compatible layouts. SmartEngine can then compose at scale without flattening every memory into the same visual answer.

That system compounds. Every new theme expands the range of books SmartEngine can compose, while the shared creation layer becomes better at handling story, format and print decisions across the catalogue. Art of Sundays can grow the product without trading away the taste that made the book desirable in the first place.

Photo books are the proving ground because they force the system to solve story, design, commerce and print together. The same creation layer can grow into other memory products over time. That is the company we are building: consumer-simple on the surface, technically deep underneath and capable of turning a vast private camera roll into something people genuinely want to keep.
